Seamstress

A loud thumping sound could be heard as Josie tumbled down the stairs. Her basement was unfinished; it was cold and messy. There was a large flat-screen television on one end of the room, surrounded by bean bags and cushions. On the other end of the room, there was a desk on which sat a sewing machine. Next to the desk was a basket of fabric and spools of thread.

Josie walked towards the television and with a big sigh threw herself onto a bean bag chair. Her hand fumbled around on the floor until it found the remote, and soon she was watching the news. She stared at the television screen for a while, and then her eyes began to wander until she noticed the sewing machine on the other end of the room. After glancing at it for a moment, Josie’s attention returned to the news.

Soon her eyes wandered again, back to the sewing machine. This time, Josie sat up, turned off the television, and walked over the sewing machine. She pulled the stool out from under the desk and sat down. Her hand fumbled around until it found the basket of fabric, and soon she was sewing.

After a while, she sat up, turned off the sewing machine, and walked back upstairs. She found her little brother, Tyler, playing in the living room.

“Hey, Tyler,” she said. “I’ve made ya something.”

Tyler looked at her excitedly. “What?”

“A cape,” she said, “to go with your superhero costume.”

“Really?” the little boy exclaimed.

“Yeah! Come try it on!”

A loud thumping sound could be heard as they both ran down the stairs.
